Although the WD Black SN770’s lacks DRAM and is outfitted with half the NAND channels as many of its competitors and predecessors, it blazed through our testing, performing like one of the best SSDs we’ve ever come across. Sure, it doesn’t deliver top-ranking sequential performance, but the firmware and SLC cache are extremely well-tuned. So much so that the SN770 not only traded blows with the SN850, but it also beat Crucial’s P5 Plus and Samsung 980 Pro in both gaming and application workloads. Not to mention beating the SN570, SN750, and SN750 SE across the board.

Low power PCIe Gen4 x4 DRAMless SSDs are looking incredibly attractive at this point. By far, the best of this new class of value-centric hyper-performing SSDs is Western Digital's SN770. Overall, we deem it the most accomplished flash-based storage device ever made. Period, end of story. At 1TB, the WD_BLACK SN770 is indeed the best performing SSD available in the Americas.

One could call this the wolf in sheep’s clothing as it is a DRAM-less SSD that stands up beside, and surpasses the performance of some of the best SSDs in the business with respect to gaming benchmarks and true data testing…those that count. By spec, it easily reaches its promised 5150 MB/s read and 4900MB/s write data transfer rates but let’s be real, it should never beat a 7GB/s Gen 4 SSD that is considered one of the best in the business in true data testing…but it does. Just when you think that could be a fluke, PCMark 10 Storage Tests (both Full and Quick) provided results where only two other SSDs bettered the WD_Black SN770, the Intel Optane 5800x and the Plextor M10P 2TB Gen4 NVMe SSD. I guess the old DRAM-less reputation just got lost in the crowd.
